India’s political parties: the organisations behind electoral democracy.
A growing, evidence-led registry of parties that have contested Indian elections—whether they became national forces, governed one state, merged, split, lost recognition or survived only briefly.
Open the political party directory
Search structured records by state, ideology, symbol, formation year, lineage and government history. This is the first import-ready layer of the all-party registry.
Splits and mergers are part of the record.
A party’s date of formation alone cannot explain its political ancestry. The full registry will add dated evidence to every branch.
How party status works
Registered is not recognised
Registration under the Representation of the People Act is distinct from Election Commission recognition as a state or national party. Recognition is based on electoral performance and can change.
Recognition is time-stamped
“National party” and “state party” are not permanent identities. Every future record will show the ECI notice and date rather than applying today’s status backwards.
Symbols are official assets
We will use a symbol image only when taken from, or faithfully reproduced from, the relevant ECI symbol order. Until then, this page uses the official symbol name and links to the source rather than creating inaccurate artwork.
Primary registry: ECI political-party lists · registration notices · symbols orders · party constitutions · organisational-election records.

Initial party-lineage register
This is the first historical layer, not the complete all-party register. “Status” refers to a lineage or organisational condition, not a legal finding about any faction. | Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) | 1997 | Bihar; social-justice / Janata-family politics. | Split from Janata Dal; subsequent leadership and family relationships require a dated, sourced record rather than a blanket “family party” label. | Bihar governments and Union coalition participation. |

| Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) | 1999 | Maharashtra and several states; centrist/secular, Congress-derived tradition. | Formed from an INC split; rival factions and symbol/status questions must be recorded from ECI orders, not partisan descriptions. | Maharashtra governments and Union coalition participation. |
| Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) | 1972 | Jharkhand; Adivasi rights and statehood movement. | Statehood-era lineage; party constitutions and factions are separately recorded by ECI. | Jharkhand governments and coalition participation. |

Leadership, families and internal democracy
Example: Samajwadi Party
The archive records Mulayam Singh Yadav as founder and Akhilesh Yadav as later party president, including their father–son relationship, without replacing the formal office title with a label. The ECI constitution and organisational-election records are the verification route.
What every complete party profile will include
Formation date and founders; constitution; presidents/chairpersons/in-charges by dates; stated ideology and manifesto; official symbols by election; recognition timeline; states contested; election performance; governments/coalitions; splits, mergers and renames; and dissolution, delisting or current status.
Leadership records must be dated
Current presidents are time-sensitive. Profiles will cite the party’s constitution, a valid organisational-election filing or an ECI notice rather than relying on an old biography or a social-media profile.
The complete-registry programme
