Research desk · contemporaneous reporting

Read the public record alongside the reporting of its time.

Laws and government releases tell us what an institution formally did. Newspapers and news agencies help document what happened around it: public debate, opposition, witnesses, protests, local effects and questions that official records may not answer on their own.

Editorial rule: reporting is valuable evidence and context, but not a replacement for an Act, official result, court judgment or audit. Significant claims—especially allegations about living people—need attribution, date, publication and, where possible, independent corroboration.

Long-running Indian news sources

These are research starting points, not endorsements. Access to older editions may require registration or a paid subscription; always preserve headline, byline, date, edition and URL when using an article.

How these sources will be used

Research questionBest evidence orderHow a news source helps
Did a law, notification or accord take effect?India Code, Gazette, Parliament or responsible ministry first.Explains debate, reaction and the events leading to the decision; it does not replace the enacted text.
Who led or supported a protest?Organiser statements, court/commission record where available, then multiple contemporaneous reports.Records speeches, attendance claims, counterviews and local reporting. A single report is not treated as the full movement.
What was alleged in an accountability case?FIR, charge sheet, court order, audit or agency statement first.Provides dated reporting and context, clearly attributed to the publication. Allegations remain allegations unless a final record establishes more.
How did an event affect people locally?Official statistics and field research where available.Preserves lived accounts and regional detail that may be absent from national records; the site labels these as reported accounts.
Has a claim been independently corroborated?Compare primary records with at least two independent, reputable reports when practical.Helps identify what is confirmed, disputed, newly reported or still unverified.

Rules for fair and legal use

Link; do not copy

The site links to original reporting and writes short, original summaries. It does not republish full articles, paid content, photographs, video footage or wire copy without permission.

Show the date and outlet

Every article-based claim added to a future record should name the outlet and publication date, then distinguish reporting from the underlying official record.

Seek more than one view

On contested events, editors should seek independent corroboration across reporting, primary documents and credible research rather than presenting one publication’s framing as final truth.

Next research additions

The immediate use of this research desk will be to deepen the People’s Movements archive: first with contemporaneous coverage of the CJP movement, the CAA/NRC protests, the JP movement, Assam movement, Chipko, Nav Nirman and state-specific movements. Each future entry will include a dated source list and a separate official-outcome link where one exists.
