Indiaโs economy, read alongside each Prime Ministerial term.
This page connects the national GDP record with the public events that shaped each period in office. It uses government and statutory-source publications, while avoiding the tempting but misleading claim that one Prime Minister โcausedโ a GDP result.
One number is not a verdict.
This flow explains why the site shows fiscal-year boundaries, consistent price bases and source revisions before any comparison.
MoSPI
Official GDP, GVA and expenditure estimates. The current National Accounts publication presents revised and final estimates using the published methodology.
Reserve Bank of India
The RBI Handbook of Statistics on Indian Economy is the principal route for historical macroeconomic tables and comparable published series.
Economic Survey
Annual Survey chapters provide official narrative context, policy discussion and data tables. The archive runs from 1957โ58 onward.
How GDP will be compared
Use real growth for comparison
Nominal GDP rises with prices as well as output. Any cross-term comparison should prioritise constant-price output or the published real-GDP growth series, state the base year, and preserve the original sourceโs revisions.
Use full financial years
A financial year is attributed to a PM term only where the entire year sits within that term. A partial opening or closing year is displayed separately, not silently credited or debited.
Keep revisions visible
National accounts are rebased and revised. We will retain source edition, release date, price basis and coverage next to every published value; no spreadsheet is treated as permanent truth.
Terms, fiscal-year boundaries and major public context
Event labels are navigation aids, not claims that an event had a single economic effect. Follow the linked official archives for the underlying record.

What this page will not do
No one-number scorecard
GDP cannot, by itself, measure living standards, jobs, inequality, environmental cost, public services or institutional health. The national record will pair economic series with clearly sourced social and fiscal indicators.
No attribution theatre
Policy is made by Parliament, ministries, states, regulators, courts, businesses and citizens across years. The archive records responsibility and chronology; it does not turn correlation into proof.
Always open to correction
