Living heritage, ecology and conflict

Loktak and Keibul Lamjao

Loktak Lake’s phumdis and Keibul Lamjao National Park form a connected wetland landscape and sangai habitat. Ramsar, wildlife and hydrological claims use their own authorities.

Culture

Sankirtana is UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Lai Haraoba, handloom traditions, polo history and diverse community practices are living traditions, not a single composite culture.

Rights and movements

Women’s market and Meira Paibi activism, anti-AFSPA campaigns, autonomy demands and peace initiatives are recorded with distinct actors, laws and outcomes.

Violence since 2023

Deaths, displacement, relief, arms recovery, prosecutions and reconciliation measures remain dated to competent records. MHA recorded a Commission of Inquiry and ₹824.78 crore in relief and rehabilitation assistance through 2024–25.

UNESCO · MHA Annual Report 2025–26 · AFSPA notifications.

Audits and public accountability

CAG State Finances, compliance and performance reports are tied to audited years, offices and government responses.

No community is assigned responsibility for an individual act. Casualty and displacement figures remain source- and date-bound; an allegation or audit observation is not a conviction.
